About Are parking fees deductible if employer does NOT provide parking at place of business

Are parking fees deductible if employer does NOT provide parking at place of business?
During the middle of the year, I started working in Downtown Honolulu where parking is very scarce and expensive. My employer does not provide parking on-site, so my only alternative is to park about a half mile away from my job in a public parking lot. According to Publication 17, "Fees you pay to park your car at your place of business are nondeductible commuting expenses". Since I am parking my car at a different area, is this a deductible expense?

Answer 1 :
No.
Answer 2 :
Sorry but no, it is still a nondeductible commuting expense even if it is not at your employer's exact place of business.
Answer 3 :
No. Regardless of where you park, it is considered commuting and is non-deductible.
Answer 4 :
no
Answer 5 :
NO they aren't deductible.
Answer 6 :
No none deductible as a part of your commuting expense as per Publication 17. Hope that you find the above enclosed information useful and good luck.
Answer 7 :
No parking related to going to your place of business is deductible, whether it is at your place of business or away from your place of business.
Answer 8 :
Parking charges to park while you are at your principal place of employment are not deductible, no matter how far away you park from the building.
Answer 9 :
No. Parking your car wherever it is parked while you are at work is not deductible. Parking is deductible only when you are on a business trip, visiting clients, or otherwise driving to somewhere other than work. If you have to pay for parking and you have to walk 1/2 mile, it might make more sense to take a bus or train, instead of driving.

About Moving to Honolulu for 6 months, Where should I stay and what about transportation

Moving to Honolulu for 6 months, Where should I stay and what about transportation?
I will be working in the airport. I want to stay close by and ride the bus to work.

Answer 1 :
Stay in a hotel.... or rent a condo... get a nice part of town or else because there is alot of crime... and scary people
Answer 2 :
Get a 6 mo lease on an apartment in Salt Lake. It's one of the cheaper areas to live and it's close to the airport so you could bike or take The Bus to work. Just be prepared to put up with elevated crime and punk kids. Carry a knife and some pepper spray and you should be ok.
Answer 3 :
Go to Craigslist and rent a room from someone in the following areas: Red Hill, Moanalua, Salt Lake. You can get a full 2-br floor of someone's house for $2000 or less, or get a room for less than that, depending on the layout.

About In honolulu do rents ask for unfurnished appartments or remodel their condo

In honolulu do rents ask for unfurnished appartments or remodel their condo?
I've notice quite a few long term really nice appartments in Honolulu. However they are furnished. Is it possible to rent them unfurnished? Also I was wondering if you are able to work with the owner of a condo to remodel the kitchen or bathrooms? Is this done? I'm ust trying to understand how it all works so any imput would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

Answer 1 :
Yes, you can rent them unfurnished for 10-25% less. Yes, a few owners will allow you to help them remodel, but you have to show photos of work you have already done, or be recommended by a friend. Some people travel and would be happy to let you stay there while you remodel.

About I am moving to Oahu in 45 days and having a hard time deciding where to live. Any suggestions

I am moving to Oahu in 45 days and having a hard time deciding where to live. Any suggestions?
I can afford $2K/month for rent and utilities, and I will be working in downtown Honolulu, south of punchbowl. I've stayed in Waimanalo and Waikiki on past trips, but never really ventured west of pearl harbor with the exception of Ko 'Olina. Trying to decide on a neighborhood to rent in and whether to do a condo, apartment or house. Any input would be great.

Answer 1 :
You probably couldn't find much in single family houses in the $2K/month range, especially if that includes utilities. If it were me, I would look in Makiki, Manoa, Kaimuki, or Kapahulu. All are reasonably close to where you will be working & should be safe neighborhoods.
Answer 2 :
Shes right. And Im just going to be upfront with you, if you are just moving from the mainland, you dont want to live west of Honolulu. You arent going to feel very welcome, and you will probably want to hang yourself within about 2 months because of the traffic that the commute would force you to endure. Do yourself a favor. If you are working in downtown Honolulu, try to find a place in town. To me personally, life in Honolulu isnt really Hawaii...if you are on your own, and have 2k to spend, you might get lucky and find an apartment or even better an ohana house (cottage) more east. Kahala, Hawaii Kai etc. Its much much nicer, the commute going east isnt nearly as bad, and after a busy day in Htown, you at least get to go home to a feeling of island life.

This is my standard answer that I give. There are good things about living in Hawaii and there are some not so good thing about living in in Hawaii. Living here is not a 24/7 vacation there are no grass shacks on the beach. I say this because people come here expecting it. And when they find out the truth they go back to the mainland disappointed and complaining about Hawaii. Oahu is the most populated. There are areas where it really crowded. And other areas where it less crowded. The weather great it does not get bellow 60 degrees. Hawaii is expensive. Ninety percent of everything is shipped in this is the main reason it cost more. Gas prices are in the high three dollar range. Visiting Hawaii is different then living here when you visit you don't pay rent or utilities. Right now our unemployment rate is quite high . If you want to work in tourism it good to know another language. With out an college education you will need to work more than one minimum wage job to survive. Our Public Educational system is lacking. It goes way beyond the Furlough Fridays. Hawaii is just as safe as anywhere else maybe safer. That is not to say Hawaii does not have crime. One of out biggest problems is with illegal drugs .We have everything the mainland has except for a few restaurants and stores. The water that surrounds us does not make much of a difference. No Daylight Savings Time we never move out clock forward or back. We have an excellent bus system on Oahu. If you are willing to take the time then it will cut down on gas costs. You can have car but you might want to take the bus most of the time and use a car only when really needed. Right now gas is in the mid to high three dollar range. I have seen gas at $3.49. Hawaii is one of most culturally diverse place in America. We have several cultures here. Hawaiians being the most obvious. We also have a diverse Asian population; Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, Thai, Vietnamese (sp?). All these culture differ. And it is best if you learn the differences. If you love food Hawaii is one of the best places to be. Due to our many cultures we have many different kinds of food. Try them all. Since we have many different cultures in Hawaii there are many set of "rules" all of them slightly different. Make an effort to learn. When you make an effort to learn the the differences then you will be accepted. There is racism in Hawaii, racism is everywhere. Some of the racism is aimed at Whites. Racism at White is not all that common so you will get Whites saying that all Locals and or Hawaiian are racist. That is not true. The Locals and Hawaiians who are racist toward Whites tend to be racist against other cultures. Racism is not right. But it does exist. Not everybody who lives in Hawaii is Hawaiian. To be Hawaiian to must have Hawaiian blood. Or be of Hawaiian ancestry. If you are like me and have lived in Hawaii all their life but have no Hawaiian blood you are considered a Local. About How much does it cost to move from Indianapolis, Indiana to Honolulu, Hawaii

How much does it cost to move from Indianapolis, Indiana to Honolulu, Hawaii?
I am planning on moving from Indianapolis, Indiana to Honolulu, Hawaii in the next two years. I want to take my car as well (Smart car) and a two bedroom apartment work of clothes and collectibles. I will not be taking any furniture as I will more than likely end up renting an already furnished apartment when I get there. What is this going to cost me to get from the Midwest to the islands? Any help is appreciated.

Answer 4 :
Contact shipping companies like Matson for quotes. You'll probably have to load up a shipping container and then get it to a shipping port (and delivered on the other end). By the time you include your own airfare and everything, you're probably looking at a few thousand... plus whatever you need to survive in the early months until you better settle in.

About How much is the pay at a Honolulu Hotel

How much is the pay at a Honolulu Hotel?
I've been trying to move to Honolulu for a while now, the only thing keeping me is that I need to find a second job. I've wondered what it's like to work in a hotel and after researching a bit i've found different answers. Being that Honolulu is a big tourist place, let's say I magically got a job at a local hotel.. How much would the pay be?
Honolulu - 2 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Depends on the hotel but they are having trouble filling rooms. Occupancy rates are way down and all of the hotels are having to discount so hiring is not a priority right now.
Answer 2 :
You may two jobs like a lot of locals do to make ends meet. The best thing might be getting a job on the mainland that would allow you to transfer. Then find a place to live before you move here. Use friends or family to help you find a place or to live with until you can get your own place! Good luck!
